Established in 1989 in the beautiful seaside Golden Outback town of Esperance, Western Australia, two local fishermen saw a need to recycle skins from the fish processing food market. This eco-friendly viewpoint and sustainable outlook is the anchor behind Mermaid’s family run organisation that prides itself on its exclusive handmade fish leather.
Visitors to Esperance can enjoy an unwinded see to our studio enhanced by a multimedia discussion to find the interesting process of tanning wild captured and farmed Barramundi, Snapper, Groper and Shark. About Mermaid Leather
Mermaid Leather’s simple beginnings were motivated by professional fishermen, R.W. Bubb and Andrew MacDermott in 1989 who saw a need to utilise wasted skins from the fish processing market. Tanning fish skins was unprecedented at the time. Through extensive research and development over a 4 year duration Mermaid Leather finally achieved a strong, aesthetically appealing and soothing to touch quality fish leather that could be utilised in a range of special methods.
In 1994 Mermaid Leather became totally commercial by purchasing industrial tanning drums and a plating maker for its ending up work. This increased its prospective to tanning countless fish skins in a single year. Andrew’s sibling David joined the fish tanning force in 1997 assuming the role of tannery manager. Designers throughout Australia accepted this new interesting quality leather while larger contracts for wholesale leather emerged.
Over the last few years demand from the retail sector has prompted this family run organisation to develop a collection of special wallets and bags.
